Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have extensive additional training in the problems of children and family systems. Learning issues or problems are viewed from a developmental perspective and are often found in tandem with psychiatric/psychological problems. The psychiatric evaluation involves a history of the child and family, including extended family. The history focuses on medical data, the longitudinal developmental data, and the interface between development of child and adults and the dynamic of that interface. Genetic factors, school history, psychological reports, teacher notes, and parental observation are all important aspects of the evaluation process. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication as part of the treatment plan.

Specific Questions:

  1. Could you describe your general approach to therapy?
  2. Will the family be required to participate in the therapy?
  3. Will you meet my child's teachers and observe him in the classroom and other settings? Is there a charge for these services?
  4. How do you determine whether medication will help my child?
  5. Will you spell out for us as specifically as possible the problems or areas that you are addressing in treatment? Will you define treatment goals?
