|
Psychologists are trained in the evaluation and treatment
of emotional problems, including the emotional/behavioral
issues that sometimes arise in children with learning
differences. Psychologists work with individuals and
families to help resolve problems that disrupt family
and school life.
Specific Questions:
- What kind of psychologist are you: school, clinical?
- Could you describe your general approach to therapy?
Cognitive? Behavioral? Could you explain your approach
to me?
- If you work with our child, will the family be required
to participate in the therapy?
- Do you have a working knowledge of our school system/
school and current federal/state laws and policies
related to learning disabilities?
- Have you been trained in the identification and
remediation of learning differences?
- Are you acquainted with alternative educational
models including local, independent schools that meet
the needs of students with learning differences?
- Will you meet with my child's teachers and/or observe
him in his school setting? Will there be a charge
for this service?
- If you think my child needs medication, will you
direct us to a professional who can prescribe it?
- Will you spell out for us, as specifically as possible,
the problems or areas that you will be addressing
in treatment? Will you define treatment goals?
