Psychologists — Main Index

Psychologists are trained in the evaluation and treatment of emotional problems, including the emotional/behavioral issues that sometimes arise in children with learning differences. Psychologists work with individuals and families to help resolve problems that disrupt family and school life.

Specific Questions:

  1. What kind of psychologist are you: school, clinical?
  2. Could you describe your general approach to therapy? Cognitive? Behavioral? Could you explain your approach to me?
  3. If you work with our child, will the family be required to participate in the therapy?
  4. Do you have a working knowledge of our school system/ school and current federal/state laws and policies related to learning disabilities?
  5. Have you been trained in the identification and remediation of learning differences?
  6. Are you acquainted with alternative educational models including local, independent schools that meet the needs of students with learning differences?
  7. Will you meet with my child's teachers and/or observe him in his school setting? Will there be a charge for this service?
  8. If you think my child needs medication, will you direct us to a professional who can prescribe it?
  9. Will you spell out for us, as specifically as possible, the problems or areas that you will be addressing in treatment? Will you define treatment goals?
