| Reading Specialists |
|
Reading Specialists are trained to understand the various
components of learning to read, including areas of coding,
comprehension, and study skills. They are able to assess
strengths and weaknesses, diagnose specific reading
problems, and should be able to devise programs of remediation.
Specific Questions:
- What aspects of reading do you consider as part
of your evaluation: e.g. decoding in isolation, literal
comprehension, inferential comprehension?
- How do you determine a child's reading level, and
how will I know what this means in terms of age, grade,
and school expectations?
- What types of reading tests do you use, and how
are they interpreted?
- What is dyslexia, and what do you mean when you
use this term?
- If my child reads fluently but has trouble with
comprehension, what does that mean?
- If my child reads well but has trouble spelling
correctly and finishing written assignments, what
does that mean?
- Are you acquainted with various successful remediation
models available such as Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood,
and Spalding?
- What do I need to know about reading so that I can
advocate effectively for my child in his school?
