Success in reading and writing depends on a strong
base of oral language. When children have poor auditory
perceptual skills and poor auditory memory, they are
at risk for reading and learning problems in formal
academic settings. Speech Pathologists evaluate and
help remediate speech and language problems such as
phonemic awareness (hearing sounds properly), articulation,
stuttering, voice disorders, delayed speech, fluency
problems, and aphasia or partial/total loss of the ability
to speak.
Specific Questions:
- What is meant by, "The basis of language is
oral language"?
- What role does phonemic awareness play in the reading
process?
- How will you diagnose my child's problem?
- How can parents help in the remediation?
- If my child is not getting adequate help, what
can I do to help him?
- Do chronic ear infections play any role in how
my child processes auditory information?
